Affordable Hair Care

Happy Thanksgiving Eve!

We cannot believe how quickly time has flown by! Today we are sharing our favorite *affordable* hair care products! Everyone likes to keep their hair healthy but it doesn’t always have to break the bank. If you’re like us and color and style your hair fairly regularly, then it’s important to keep up with proper care! I have tried going blonde and failed miserably (ombre obsession led to impatiently bleaching my hair 6 times before I sadly had to just chop it all off) so now I do everything I can to grow out my locks and keep them healthy and shiny. Maddie has recently gone blonde (the correct way – waiting out those awkward stages and eventually achieving a beautiful light color!) so for her she has to make sure she keeps hers nice and hydrated so she’s still growing despite the bleach. We also couldn’t get through our days without a good dry shampoo, wave spray and heat protectant! Below are our favorite hair care products – most of which you can find at a local drug store!

Enjoy!

XOXO,

Ash & Maddie

5 Reasons to workout with a friend!

Happy Tuesday, all!

Today we’re talking how much better it is to workout with a friend. Finding the motivation to make it to the gym can be tough, ESPECIALLY now that we have (I guess?)  officially entered Winter here in KC –  no one likes venturing out to the gym in the freezing cold! Since Maddie has moved back to KC full time, it is SO much easier for us to make sure we get our workout in for the day. We are each other’s motivation! Sharing 5 reasons to workout with a friend below.

  1. You’ll workout harder. Don’t lie. Every time you’re next to someone on a treadmill you’re taking a peak at their speed, time and intensity, right? We can’t be the only ones 😉 We’re all a little competitive! When you’re with a friend you’ll push each other to keep going, make it to that 30 minute mark, or go do those ab workouts you always put off at the end. Maddie always pushes me to keep going and I always leave happier knowing I didn’t skip out on those last 20 minutes!
  2. You’ll be more motivated. Think about it. Every time you say to yourself “I’ll go workout after work” how many times do you find an excuse not to go or something that you just haaaaavvveee to go do that takes precedent over the gym? More often than not! It’s way harder (and much more effort) to miss a gym date when you make plans with someone else.
  3. Workouts can be more fun. We realize most people are trying to socialize at the gym. Nothing more frustrating than that person who wants to have a full blown conversation when you’re 15 minutes deep on the stair master! However, when Maddie and I go together, the time not only passes by so much quicker, but we end up having a blast and catching up in between different workouts.
  4. Sharing Tips. Maddie and I have different workout routines but whenever we go together we are always reminding each other of moves we forget about or need to be doing. Maddie is a huge runner and I like to spend ample time weightlifting, so when we go together we end up getting the best of both worlds and a killer workout.
  5. Shared goals. If two of you are working towards a common goal, it helps to build more resolve and resilience. It’s a great feeling to achieve a goal, and it can be even better when you achieve it with someone else!

There are plenty of reasons to workout with a partner but Maddie and I’s favorite is just spending a little extra time together and getting to hang out while also getting in a good sweat!

Have a great week!

Ash & Maddie Screen Shot 2017-11-07 at 3.45.03 PM.png

Healthy Game Day Snacks

Happy Sunday!

It’s been a busy week and we couldn’t be more grateful for day light savings! That extra hour is everything, especially on a Sunday! Our beloved Chiefs are playing (and hopefully beating the Cowboys) today so we are sharing a few of our favorite healthy recipes for game day! These are great for whether you’re tailgating or hosting a watch party. Everyone loves snacking but it’s even better when you don’t have to feel guilty about indulging. Below are 4 of our favorites, two of which we made today!

  1. Pesto & Turkey Cucumber Roll Ups – We made these today and they are SO easy and SO good. Recipe from Ambitious Kitchen. We used pesto as well as red pepper hummus – see below for our finished product from today!  Screen Shot 2017-11-05 at 12.55.04 PMScreen Shot 2017-11-05 at 12.55.19 PM
  2. Taco Stuffed Mini Peppers – another GREAT party snack and crowd pleaser! Not to mention you can make a ton for very little $! Recipe from Bunsen Burner Bakery.
  3. Skinny Buffalo Chicken Dip – if you’re like us, you kind of roll your eyes at anything that has “skinny in the title because more often than not that means way less flavor, but trust us you will not be disappointed with this recipe from The Garlic Diaries!
  4. Apple Nachos – you know we had to include something sweet! These are super easy and fun and you won’t feel the least bit guilty about eating as much as you want. Today, we used the recipe from Trial & Eater.Screen Shot 2017-11-05 at 12.55.37 PM

    Happy Eating!

No Bake Energy Balls

We love this recipe! We see variations all of the time and sometimes adapt and substitute ingredients but these are our favorite healthy on the go snack. They’re great for before or after a workout, breakfast and even dessert! We usually double the recipe so we have enough for a week or two. Enjoy!

Ashle & Maddie

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup oatmeal (we use old-fashioned oats)
  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips (we prefer dark chocolate chips!)
  • 2/3 cup toasted coconut flakes (broil on high for 2-3 minutes)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup ground flax seeds
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional)

Directions:

  • Stir all ingredients together in bowl until thoroughly mixed. Cover and let chill in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes. When mixture has hardened a bit it makes it easier to form into balls.
  • Once chilled, roll into balls. Store and keep refrigerated.
  • Makes about 20-25 balls.

Our favorite thing about this recipe is how flexible it is! If you are allergic to any of the ingredients, or if you are just looking for other substitution ideas, feel free to adapt.

  • Chocolate Chips: We generally use dark chocolate chips, but you can definitely  substitute in any other kinds of chips (butterscotch, milk chocolate, white chocolate, cinnamon chips, and even vegan chocolate chips.)  These can also be left out all together if chocolate isn’t your thing!
  • Peanut Butter: If you are allergic to peanuts, feel free to substitute in any other kinds of nut butter, like almond or sunflower seed, cashew butter, etc.  We love using almond butter for a healthier option!
  • Sweetener: We generally prefer honey in this recipe, but agave nectar works just as well!
